Dear Family,
This week we are talking about BUGS! Here are some fun activities and resources that you could try at home.
Story Time: Eric Carle reads The Very Hungry Caterpillar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkYmvxP0AJI or if you have the book at home you can read it with your child.
Movement: Use whole body movements to move like a caterpillar or butterfly. This is creative fun! Using whole body movement addresses gross motor development – the development of your child’s big muscles. Gross motor activities help with strength, coordination and balance.
Language: Talk with your child about the foods in the story, Very Hungry Caterpillar, what they like and what they do not like about the food, the food textures, and colors. You can taste and eat some of the foods.
Math: Introduce the shape of CIRCLE. Talk to students about different size circles, bigger and smaller. Look for things in your home shaped as a circle. Introduce the numbers 1-5.
Sensory: Try these heathy Bug theme, caterpillar snacks.
Arts and Craft: These are some fun creative ideas to enjoy with your child. However, if you don’t have the materials you can simply draw a caterpillar by making circles on a paper. Simply drawing together reinforces to children that putting a pencil or crayon to paper is a great way to get our thoughts and ideas onto paper. Remember: any art activity should be focused on the process, not the product. Using crayons, paint or glue helps a child with fine motor development skills, using their fingers in a coordinated way. It takes time for young children to gain this coordination. So even just scribbling on paper is a way for young children to practice! And remember, having fun with your child is the most important part of the activity!
Outdoor Play: Springtime is a wonderful time to explore nature. Look outdoors for caterpillars and butterflies. We remind children to practice safety, look with our EYES, not with our hands, so we don’t touch the bugs! Gentle touches with parents.
